I think Jon is plotting to take over the world.

Yes, the entire world.

You see, normally Jon reads fiction. Things like Tom Robbins and Junot Diaz, among, many, many other innumerous authors.  Then things suddenly changed.   A couple of nights ago we were both in bed reading our respective books and as I start dozing off I read the header of his page “Supernatural Numbers.”  My mind quickly started turning, “Why is my husband reading about Supernatural Numbers? Muy strange…”  And then, the next day in the mail a book arrives that he ordered. Its title you may ask? “Discrete-Time Signal Processing.”   Ummm, yeah.   What the heck is going on?

Yam, Kale, and Leek White Lasagna

Today is a big day. It’s Halloween. It’s the one day in the year that we can be someone else, imagining ourselves in their shoes.  I can be pretty darn lazy when it comes to certain things. This includes Halloween. My signature Halloween outfit for many years? Crazy woman. This consisted of getting my hair tangled and messy, putting on a ridiculous amount of jewelry, and wearing lots of frayed clothes. That was my “costume.”

I went to school in Iowa.  I moved there from Puerto Rico.  Let’s just say that I didn’t even know where Iowa was before deciding to go to school there.  My high school U.S. Government teacher had to pinpoint it on a map for me. Sad, but true.  To add to my Iowa naivety I also didn’t know this was the land that grew corn, which meant lots of farmers and itty-bitty small towns.  Yep, I basically knew nothing about Iowa.

I am currently reading The Last American Man by Elizabeth Gilbert.  You know, the same Elizabeth Gilbert who wrote Eat, Pray, Love, which then turned into a movie starring Julia Roberts.  I was not a fan of Eat, Pray, Love.  Especially when she went to India to “pray,” it was a bore; it took me months to get through India.  I haven’t watched the movie out of fear that I will again be moved to extreme boredom.  Nevertheless, Jon recommended reading this previous novel of hers about the mountain man Eustace Conway, “The Last American Man.”  Thus far, the novel is a great read.

Welcome!  I’m Nalena and I am a wannabe baker and cook.  I love to toodle around in the kitchen creating tasty treats and food while avoiding going to the gym.  I reside in the funky neighborhood of Capitol Hill in Seattle, though it’s not as funky as Fremont; we don’t have a life-size rocket or a massive statue of Lenin. We do have a statue of Jimi Hendrix, but it is tiny in comparison to the rocket and Lenin.  By the way, that Lenin statue is for sale, at a measly $150,000.  It did come all the way from Russia after all.
